The Moringa plant - A true treasure $$$

A Reseacher at the University of Baroda in India, Ms Vanisha Nambiar, has said the Moringa tree, a medicinal plant which is abundant in Ghana, is the key to resolving the problem of malnutrition on the continent.

Ms Nambiar, who is also a nutritionist, said the plant, which is drought resistant, has high quantities of Vitamin A and significant quantities of Vitamin B, calcium, iron, protein, potassium, magnesium, selenium, zinc and amino acids.

According to her, the Moringa plant was also known to be an effective medication for epileptic, paralytic and diabetic patients. Additionally, it was effective for patients with obesity, high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases.

Ms Nambiar indicated that every part of the plant was useful, including the seeds, which could be extracted for oil and also chewed, just like peanuts.

There is the need to share information and experinces in this regard if the commercialisation of the Moringa plant is to be fully realised.

She said CTA supported the Moringa workshop because it recognised its importance to both rural development and nutritional security.

The participants included nutrional and agricultural scientists, rural non-governmental organisations, farmers and private manufacturing companies.

PMMC Dep. MD jailed for Contempt

An Accra High court has sentenced the Deputy Managing Director in charge of Finance and Administration of the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), DR Aristotle Ktey, to a one -month imprisonment for contempt of court.

He was found guilty of various wrongful acts he committed while an application was for injunction was pending at the High Court, including hiding the office keys of the Managing Director (MD), Mr Peter Boachie, thereby preventing the MD from resuming work after his annual leave.

Also when the case was called for hearing, the deputy managing director blatantly walked out of the court without putting up any defence.

In the same suite, the application for injunction sought by the managing director was granted, restraining the board and its chairman, Mr Stephen Adufour , from removing him from office.

" The board and the Chairman has no power to take that decision. This is because the term of the board has expired and the chairman had not obtained the authority of the shareholders to act beyond its powers," it said.

The court, therefore, ordered the respondents to observe the status quo and not to interfere with the plaintiffs work till the final determination of the case.

Saga of the 77parcels of cocaine

The Greater Accra Regional Tribunal discharged four persons, including the owner of the vessel which was allegedly used to cart 76 parcels of cocaine into the country.

Joseph Kojo Dawson, the owner of the MV Benjamin, Freeman Sosi, a boat owner, Evans Chawetey Tsekobi, a mechanic, and Alhaji Moro Mohammed were discharged by the tribunal after a Chief State Attorney, Ms Gertrude Aikins, had entered a nolle prosegui, which means the Attorney General has the powers to discontinue a case against an accused person.

The four persons had been charged with various counts of conspiracy, use of property to commit narcotic offence and abetment of crime.

According to counsel, Dawson was arrested on April 27, 2006, later granted bail by the circuit court and was complying with the bail terms, only to be re-arrested.

On his part, counsel for Tsekobi, Mr. Willie Amarfio, told he tribunal that there were no facts accompanying the original charge sheet or the substituted charge sheet.

Counsel for Alhaji Mohammed also prayed the court to grant his client bail on the ground that the accused person voluntarily reported to the police and was granted bail, only to be re-arrested.

Counsel assured the court the Alhaji Mohammed, who is currently on admission at the Police Hospital, would co-operate with the tribunal when granted bail.

on November 2, 2006, the court remaned the four to reappear on November 17, 2006, following Ms Aikins's submissin that he court should remand the accused person because investigations into the matter had not been completed.
