Ghana Earns 84.9 Million Euros from Wood Exports

Ghana earned 84,914,450 Euros from the export of 217,590 cubic metres of wood products from January -June this year.

The export of secondary wood products, comprising lumber, veneer, boules, peg, and plywood during the period, fetched 74,968,508 Euros [88.30 per cent] with kiln dried lumber constituting 55.82 per cent of the value.

Significantly, the increasing kilning capacity of the timber industry, the high export unit price for kiln dried lumber and domestic disincentive for the export of air-dried lumber contributed to the relatively stable levels of earnings from that product.

Foreign interest in Ghana's Tertiary wood products was fairly keen and price of furniture parts remained generally stable in the major markets and impressively high in the United Kingdom [UK], France and the United States of America [USA].

The price of other tertiary wood products, such as dowels, moulding, broomstick and profile boards also firmed well especially this June.

Sixty-six countries imported wood products from Ghana, ten of which contributed 66,315,888.13 Euros [78.01 per cent] to the period's total export earnings. The USA, India and Italy remained the major destinations for Ghana's wood products export just as during a similar period last year.

Ghana's wood products exports to the ECOWAS markets were equally encouraging with the export of plywood and lumber to Nigeria and Togo respectively, topping the products mix.

Plywood export of 21,750 cubic metres to Nigeria was the highest volume from Ghana during the period under review, in addition to fetching the highest unit price of Euro 317 per cubic metre and contributing 57.24 per cent to the total export value of the product.

Our only major worry is the environment and the rate of lumbering compared to tree planting exercises in Ghana. With so many trees being cut and the weather being extremely hotter than before at the same time 5 years back, we may have a problem. Most Ghanaians then look for shade or run to air-conditioners for instant relief.

We hope the Government of Ghana can bear this in mind before depleting all our vitally important rainforests. Of course, we are aware the results will be truly catastrophic!
