KNUST Dismiss 24 Students

Twenty-four students of the University of Ghana, Legon, and of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology [KNUST] in Kumasi have been dismissed for breaching regulation governing the two Universities.

Eight students of the University of Ghana were expelled for their involvement in examination malpractices during the first semester examination of the 2005/06 academic year.

At the KNUST, 16 students, made up of 15 Nigerians and one Ghanaian, were dismissed for gross misconduct on campus.

Their dismissal followed diligent monitoring of their activities on campus by personnel of the security service as well as of other members of the University community.

In addition to the eight student dismissed at the University of Ghana, four students were also suspended for two semesters each while 10 others were reprimanded by the academic board of the University.

Out of the number expelled one was an MPhil student, five were Bachelor of Art [BA] students and two Bachelor of Science [BSc] students.

Their offences, the documents indicated, were possession of unauthorised materials in the examination hall as well as collusion during examination.

The Head of the KNUST Relations Office, Mr. Ben Andoh, explained that the authorities saw that the continued stay or presence of the 16 students on campus posed a great risk to the university connunity, particularly staff and dtudents.

He said the Vice- Chancellor after careful monitoring of the activities of the student on campus directed that they be dismissed.

Mr. Andoh said the dismissal of the students was not to prejudice ongoing investigations by the police into last weekend's disturbances on campus and other incidents.

University authorities had no option but to declare a state of emergency.

Calm has since returned to the campus following stringent security measures imposed by the University's security agencies.

The Head of Security at the KNUST Lt Col William Kofi Addo (retd), said that no incident had been recorded after the disturbances.
