The Moringa plant - A true treasure $$$

A Reseacher at the University of Baroda in India, Ms Vanisha Nambiar, has said the Moringa tree, a medicinal plant which is abundant in Ghana, is the key to resolving the problem of malnutrition on the continent.

Ms Nambiar, who is also a nutritionist, said the plant, which is drought resistant, has high quantities of Vitamin A and significant quantities of Vitamin B, calcium, iron, protein, potassium, magnesium, selenium, zinc and amino acids.

According to her, the Moringa plant was also known to be an effective medication for epileptic, paralytic and diabetic patients. Additionally, it was effective for patients with obesity, high blood pressure and other cardiovascular diseases.

Ms Nambiar indicated that every part of the plant was useful, including the seeds, which could be extracted for oil and also chewed, just like peanuts.

There is the need to share information and experinces in this regard if the commercialisation of the Moringa plant is to be fully realised.

She said CTA supported the Moringa workshop because it recognised its importance to both rural development and nutritional security.

The participants included nutrional and agricultural scientists, rural non-governmental organisations, farmers and private manufacturing companies.
